The day every woman dreams of, the man of her dreams, proposing to her. Long gone are the days of men needing to “surprise” their beautiful brides to be with a ring solely picked out by them.
Today’s women are independent, romantic and educated. There are so many styles, designs, color, shape and sizes of engagement rings. This ring is going to be the symbol of your love, cherished forever, so why not choose the ring that best suits you.
There are a few things to know when either picking a ring for your special someone, or choosing the ring together.
• Material – Your engagement ring will be worn everyday along with the wedding band. Determine what the everyday color of jewelry worn is. Do you prefer yellow gold, white gold, platinum or maybe titanium, the latest trend in metal jewelry?
• Size – It does matter! Some women prefer a stone that demands attention; others may want a small expression of the love shared between you. A standard size diamond in engagement rings usually will range from a .50 carat to a 1.00 carat. Deciding on the size of the stone will depend on your wallet as well as your finger. If you have small petite fingers, a giant 2.00 carat stone will look out of place. A more conservative size will fit your finger nicely.
• Color – Diamonds come in many colors. Some of the “fancy” colors will also come along with a larger price tag, as these stones are often the “elite” of diamonds. The most common colors seen on the market today are champagne, pink, yellow and sometimes blue. Red, although extremely rare, can also be found. Colored diamonds are generally treated with different intensity of heat, to achieve their desired colors.
• Style – The key to remember is what style of wedding band will be accompanying this solitaire? Most often times, engagement rings are bought alone, rather than in a set. The style of the wedding band will make a considerable difference on how well the engagement ring will be paired. The most traditional engagement rings are the “Tiffany” or the “Cathedral” settings. These are beautiful, simple settings that display your diamond wonderfully. This style will coordinate nicely with all styles of bands.
Whatever size, style or color you choose for the engagement ring, remember that it is the love put into it that counts. If choosing a ring for your girlfriend all on your own, ask her family or friends to help you decide what she would like.
